The Links on Longboat is an 18-hole barrier-island resort layout completely transformed by Ron Garl in 2014. Measuring 6,748 yards, the seaside-inspired design replaces traditional heavy bunkering with wide, innovative grass collection areas and reshaped green complexes. Re-grassed entirely with salt-tolerant Platinum Paspalum to thrive on the Gulf Coast, the layout utilizes shifting ocean breezes and precise perimeter waterways to present a tactical, highly playable resort asset.

Seaside Links Philosophy
Set on a narrow barrier island between the Gulf of Mexico and Sarasota Bay, the 2014 redesign of the Links on Longboat (formerly the Islandside Course) was engineered to unlock a true seaside character. The design team stripped away non-native landscaping and converted out-of-play areas into low-maintenance beachscapes accented by coquina shell. This open, coastal framework leverages natural island wind patterns and elevated tee boxes to dramatically maximize visibility and playing strategy across the entire 18-hole routing.
The "Watery Challenge" Redefined
While the layout features small waterways running along almost every fairway, the architecture focuses heavily on tactical placement over raw punishment. Off the tee, players must choose precise angles to avoid the lateral water hazards. However, the approach and recovery design is intentionally forgiving; by reducing sand bunker dependence and introducing wide grass collection areas, the course allows resort guests to utilize creative pitch-and-run options if they miss the putting surface.
Coastal Environmental Engineering
Operating in a delicate marine ecosystem requires advanced agronomic planning. The resort-wide transformation included re-greening all 18 holes with high-performance Platinum Paspalum grass. This salt-tolerant turf allows the course to utilize alternative, high-salinity irrigation sources while maintaining ultra-consistent, lush fairways and fast, smooth putting surfaces year-round.
